TRANSIT & STORAGE Joins U.S. EPA SmartWay® Transport Partnership
Plymouth, WI – Glacier
Transit & Storage today announced that it joined the SmartWay® Transport Partnership, an innovative collaboration
between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry which provides
a framework to assess the environmental and energy efficiency of goods movement
Glacier Transit & Storage will contribute to the Partnership’s
savings of 1.5 billion gallons of
fuel, $3.6 billion in fuel costs, 14.7 MMT of carbon dioxide (CO2),
215,000 tons of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and 8,000 tons of
particulate matter. Carbon
dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air
pollutant that contributes to smog. By
joining SmartWay Transport Partnership, Glacier
Transit & Storage demonstrates its strong environmental leadership and
The SmartWay Transport Partnership goals fit our organization’s mission and
reaffirm that we are doing our part as responsible corporate citizens.
Developed jointly in early 2003 by EPA and Charter Partners
represented by industry stakeholders, environmental groups, American Trucking
Associations and Business for Social Responsibility, this innovative program
was launched in 2004. Partners rely upon SmartWay tools and approaches to track
and reduce emissions and fuel use from goods movement.
The Partnership currently has over 3000 Partners.

Here at Glacier, we use nitrogen in our tractor and trailer tires as part of a continuous effort toward green initiatives. Nitrogen inflation is the best method for inflating tires. Due to its larger molecular size, nitrogen escapes through the tires rubber much slower than regular air. This keeps your tire at the correct pressure longer, increasing tire life while reducing gas consumption. It also increases safety since, according the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 95% of all blowouts are caused by incorrectly inflated tires.
But it’s not really about the nitrogen, it's about eliminating water vapor, oxygen and other harmful gasses. The air we breathe is 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen, and 1 percent other gasses. Compressed air also contains varying amounts of dirt, water vapor and other contaminants. Water vapor escapes from a tire up to 250 times faster than nitrogen, and the other gases in air escape 3-4 times faster than nitrogen. Water vapor causes much higher pressure changes as the tire heats up during operation. Oxidation can harm many TPMS sensors and it can also make rubber brittle and cause it to lose tensile strength. Nitrogen also eliminates the dirt particles inherent in compressed air that often cause valve leaks by preventing the valve stem from sealing properly.
We can fill your personal vehicle or fleet's tires.
